Perhaps the better question is: CAN BATHROOM GRAFFITI BECOME ART ? I have certainly seen artistic graffiti on toilet walls. I have seen inspiring poems, humorous jokes, amazing drawings, and plenty of degrading remarks.
It is hard to say. I think of most graffiti as art. when i tag i just do my name or some word or phrase that makes you think about it. But there are more people that would rather stare at a blank wall so i dont think it will ever be something that everyone likes.
and even before your question begins the question of: WHAT IS ART?
it's a topic that has evolved and broadened itself so much so as to infiltrate every fiber of our being.
then who is left to say what graffiti IS or is NOT art? some ny times or LA tribune critic? a southeby's auctioneer? a pop-culture purchaser buying for some high salary design firm?
so many before us have streched the boundaries that to presume somethings are NOT art is to in fact be blasphemous to art itself.
i myself still love i good limerick about anyone from nantucket.
i think of most of it as art but most of the bathroom graffiti around here is racist remarks but i have seen very funny ones and even some up lifting poetry. i would only classify the drawings and the artistic writing as art but i believe that poetry and comedy are also art
